Job Summary

We have an exciting opportunity for an impressive physicist or material scientist to join the award-winning team at Novosound and lead our thin-film sensor development activities. This will help us continue our mission of Pushing the Limits of Ultrasound Sensing and Imaging.

Based in Biocity, Newhouse (Scotland), we are looking for an enthusiastic, ambitious, motivated person to develop our thin film deposition processes, improve the outputs of our sensors, and tackle some of the biggest sensing challenges with our clients (among the biggest companies in the world!).

We're looking for someone with a PhD level qualification (of course, equivalent industrial experience works too!) in Physics or an Engineering based field and a strong background in thin film deposition techniques, primarily Plasma Vapor Deposition.

If you've spent time working, and leading a team, in a fast-growing SME, that will be of significant interest too!

Dimensions

  • MSc (Honours) in Physics, Material Science, Engineering, Sensors or related Discipline
  • PhD level research studies into Thin Film Technology and plasma vapor deposition processes (or Industrial equivalent, i.e. KTP or EngD )
  • Experience of Ultrasound Transducers, Sensors and Imaging would be highly Beneficial.
  • Minimum five years of research and/or commercial thin film experience
  • Must have strong attention to detail and process
  • Strong communication skills and ability to interact with internal and external partners
  • Works well under pressure in a rapidly changing environment
  • Experience of line management, team leadership, and/or research student supervision.
  • Demonstrates a high level of professionalism in dealing with confidential and sensitive materials/issues
  • Be a problem solver at heart with a genuine interest in helping team members

Key Responsibilities

  • Process development and refinement of Plasma Vapour Deposition for piezoelectric thin films.
  • Experimental validation and characterisation of Novosound thin film process and sensors.
  • Core research into the ultrasound capabilities and possible improvements of novosound’s proprietary technology
  • Carrying out computer modelling of acoustic thin films
  • Report technological developments in the Thin Film sensors to the Chief Executive Officer`
  • Prepare technical reports and presentations for Board Updates
  • Supervise industrial PhD students at partner universities
  • Represent the technical team at conferences and tradeshows
  • Interact with customers to produce market and product specifications for ultrasonic sensors and arrays.
